Comments
Suggested text: When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
Suggested text: If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Cookies
Suggested text: If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Embedded content from other websites
Suggested text: Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Who we share your data with
Suggested text: If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
Suggested text: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
Suggested text: If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Suggested text: Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
Gentle Devotion app · Last updated 7 November 2026
The short version. Gentle Devotion has no adverts, no tracking and no account to create. Your settings, journal, favourites and progress stay on your device. We never sell your data.
Who we are
Gentle Devotion is a daily Bible verse and wellbeing app. It is published by Maddox Technical Solutions. If you have any question about your privacy, email hello@gentledevotion.org.
What stays on your device
These are saved only on your phone or tablet. We cannot see them:
- your settings (Bible, reminder time, text size, font, theme and other comfort settings)
- your journal entries and mood words
- your favourite verses, the practices you have done, and your practice series
If you delete the app, these are deleted too.
What reaches our servers
Daily content. The app downloads new verses and practices from our server. These requests do not include anything about you.
A random ID, only if you use certain features. If you ask for a free Supporter place, or read a Bible translation that we have to license, the app creates an anonymous ID. It is a random code and is not linked to your name, email or phone number. We use it only to:
- remember that you have a free place and when it ends
- check that you are allowed to read licensed Bible text
- count how many free places are being used, so that the churches and charities who pay for them can see the total (they never see who you are)
Our server is run by Supabase in London, United Kingdom. Like any web server, it may briefly log technical details such as IP addresses for security. We do not use them to identify you.
Payments
If you become a Supporter, payment is handled by Google Play or the Apple App Store. We do not see your card or bank details. The store tells the app whether you are a Supporter.
Features provided by your phone
- Read it to me uses your phone’s own text-to-speech voice.
- Speak instead of typing in the journal uses your phone’s speech recognition service, and asks for microphone permission first. Depending on your phone, speech may be processed by that service (for example Google) under its own privacy policy. Gentle Devotion does not record or keep your voice.
- Daily reminders are scheduled on your phone. No server is involved.
- Learn more links open in your web browser, and the website you visit has its own privacy policy.
What we do not do
- No adverts and no advertising IDs.
- No analytics or tracking tools.
- We never sell or share your data with anyone for marketing.
Children
Gentle Devotion is not designed for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing hello@gentledevotion.org. Because the only thing we hold is an anonymous ID, the easiest way is to tell us roughly when you asked for a free place. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your device. If you are in the UK or EU, you can also complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office, ico.org.uk).
Changes
If we change how the app uses data, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change happens.
Terms of service
Gentle Devotion app and website · Last updated 7 November 2026
The short version.
- The daily verse, the practice and every comfort setting are free, and always will be.
- Supporter is optional. You pay through Google Play or the App Store, and you can cancel any time there.
- If money is tight, you can ask for a free place. No questions asked.
- Gentle Devotion supports your faith and wellbeing. It is not medical, mental health or pastoral care.
- Please be kind, and don’t misuse the app or the website.
1. Who we are
Gentle Devotion (“we”, “us”) is a daily Bible verse and wellbeing app, and this website, published by Maddox Technical Solutions. You can contact us at hello@gentledevotion.org.
These terms apply when you use the Gentle Devotion app or visit gentledevotion.org. By using either, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use them.
2. Your privacy
How we handle information is explained in our privacy policy. In short, your settings, journal and favourites stay on your device, and we never sell your data.
3. Using Gentle Devotion
You must be 13 or older to use the app. If you are under 18, please check with a parent or carer before buying anything.
You may use the app and website for your own personal, non-commercial use. Please don’t:
- copy, resell or republish our content, apart from sharing a verse or practice with friends
- try to break, overload or get round the security of the app, the website or our servers
- claim free places or Supporter access in bulk, or by pretending to be many people
- use the app or website for anything unlawful
4. Not a replacement for care
The verses, explanations and practices are there to encourage you. They are not medical, psychological, legal or pastoral advice, and they are not a replacement for a doctor, therapist, minister or other professional.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please contact emergency services or a helpline straight away. In the UK, you can call 999 or Samaritans on 116 123. In the US, call or text 988.
Only try a practice if it feels safe and right for you. Every practice has an easier version, and you can always skip it.
5. Free and Supporter
Always free: the daily verse, “in simple words”, read aloud, the bigger picture, the daily practice, reminders and every comfort and accessibility setting.
Supporter (optional) adds extras such as the journal, favourites, practice series, recorded readings and licensed Bible translations. Extras may change over time, and some (such as recorded readings and licensed translations) are added as they become available.
- Subscriptions (monthly, yearly and pay what you can) renew automatically until you cancel. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
- Lifetime is a one-off payment for Supporter extras for as long as we offer the app.
- Payments, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled by Google Play or the Apple App Store under their terms. You can cancel in your Google Play or App Store subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- If you cancel, you keep Supporter extras until the end of the period you have paid for.
- If we change a subscription price, the store will tell you before it applies, and you can cancel.
6. Free places
If paying is hard, you can ask for a free place in the app (Settings, then See support options). You get Supporter extras for 12 months, and you can ask again after that. We don’t ask why. Free places are paid for by churches and charities, so please only ask if you need one. We may stop offering free places in future, but we will not take away a place you already have before it ends.
7. Bible texts and our content
The World English Bible (WEB) and the Berean Standard Bible (BSB) are in the public domain. Other translations are used with permission or under licence from their publishers, and their own terms apply. Licensed translations can only be shown while we hold that licence.
Everything else in the app and on the website, including the practices, explanations, design, name and logo, belongs to us or the people who license it to us. Please don’t use the Gentle Devotion name or logo without asking.
8. Your journal
What you write in your journal is yours and stays on your device. We can’t see it, which also means we can’t recover it if your device is lost or the app is deleted.
9. Links to other websites
“Learn more” links and links on this website may take you to other websites. We choose them with care, but we are not responsible for their content or how they handle your data.
10. Changes and availability
We work to keep Gentle Devotion running, but we can’t promise it will always be available or free of mistakes. We may update, change or stop features. If we ever stop the app completely, we will try to give you notice, and the store’s refund rules apply to anything you have paid for.
11. Our responsibility to you
If you live in the UK, you have legal rights in relation to digital content that is faulty or not as described, and nothing in these terms affects them. Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law does not allow us to limit.
Otherwise, we are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, or for loss to a business. Our total responsibility to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the problem.
12. Ending
You can stop using Gentle Devotion at any time by deleting the app, and cancelling any subscription in your store settings. We may stop access for anyone who seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms.
13. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change matters to Supporters, we will also say so in the app before it applies.
14. The law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts. If you live in the US or elsewhere, you may also have rights under your local consumer law.
15. Contact
Questions, complaints or ideas? Email hello@gentledevotion.org. We’d love to hear from you.
